Video: Keeping it quick and simple in the kitchen

I’m a big fan of keeping things quick and simple in the kitchen, but it is also extremely important to me to make healthy, delicious meals – who wants quick and simple if it tastes like cardboard?!

This is why one of my favorite go-to meals is the ‘Bowl’—known in some circles as the Buddha Bowl, Glory Bowl or my personal favorite Hippie Bowl (who couldn’t use a little more free-love at lunch time).

Bowls make a great alternative to the standard lunch time sandwich and are a great transition from the cooler salads of summer to a heartier, belly warming meal.

You can create dozens of great flavour combos and a Bowl is an excellent way to use up veggies or left-overs in the fridge, a technique I like to call ‘same-same but different’.

My top 4 tips for creating a perfect bowl are:

  1. Start with a great base of slow carbs such as brown rice, quinoa, barley, wheat berries, beans or lentils.
  2. Add a balance of colors and textures. Try to add as many colors as you can, try grated raw beets or carrots for crunch, grilled or roasted veggies or toasted nuts and seeds.
  3. Add a little protein. So many options here, but some of my favourites are grilled chicken, marinated tofu, edamame or sliced hardboiled egg.
  4. Add a little something special & be creative. Try adding some diced mango, pomegranate seeds, sauerkraut, yogurt cheese, nutritional yeast or a spicy sriracha avocado mash.
